The Chinese authorities tried to conceal this fact.

China's newest nuclear submarine sank in late May or early June, Reuters and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing anonymous sources.

The incident occurred at the Wuachang shipyard near the city of Wuhan. The Zhou-class submarine built by China State Shipbuilding Corp sank.

It was last seen at a pier on the Yangtze River in late May, where it was being fitted out before going to sea. In early June, cranes arrived at the site of the sinking to lift the submarine from the bottom of the river. This is evidenced by satellite images of the scene from Planet Labs. The PRC authorities tried to conceal this fact.

It is not known about victims or injured as a result of the incident. It is also not reported whether the sunken boat was carrying nuclear fuel.
