The secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, Golos MP Roman Kostenko said on Facebook on August 12 that he would join the Ukrainian defence forces fighting on Russian territory.

The MP addressed parliament speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk in the published video.

"Ruslan, I am now in front of the Russian Federation. I apologise that it is now without permission. But still I will go there, together with our defence forces. And then I will write a letter about the business trip. Glory to Ukraine!" said Kostenko.

Kostenko was born in 1983. He graduated from the Odesa Institute of Ground Forces (speciality - combat application and management of Army units).

In 2005-2008 he served in the 79th Independent Airborne Assault Brigade in Mykolaiv, was a platoon commander, then deputy company commander. Later, he transferred to the Security Service of Ukraine and served in the "A" Special Operations Centre (Alfa). He was deputy head of the Alpha department of the SSU directorate in Mykolaiv region.

In 2014-2019, he took part in the fighting in eastern Ukraine, including in the battles for Donetsk airport (the defenders of the airport were nicknamed "cyborgs").

In 2019, he was elected as a parliamentarian from the Golos party. After the Russian Federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kostenko combines his work as a parliamentarian with defending Ukraine from the occupiers on the frontline.
