Political Scientist: Separatist Tendencies Are Very Strong In Dagestan

Most Russians do not recognize it as Russian territory.

Political scientist, expert on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, candidate of political sciences Ivan Preobrazhensky, in an interview with Radio NV, said that in Dagestan, where a number of shootings and the burning of a synagogue recently took place, there were very strong separatist sentiments, and the Russians themselves did not consider this region to be the territory of the Russian Federation.

“It must be recalled that after the rebellion of [the now dead head of the Wagner PMC] Yevgeny Prigozhin, [Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin first came to Dagestan. Because, as they say, an analysis of social media showed his administration that Dagestan was almost completely on Prigozhin’s side. They were in favor of the central government falling, and they would take care of themselves, relatively speaking,” he said.

The political scientist noted that, in addition to the fact that “separatist tendencies are very strong” in Dagestan, Russians also do not consider this region to be part of the Russian Federation.

“According to opinion polls, when they were still relatively normal in Russia, the majority of Russians did not consider Dagestan to be the territory of the Russian Federation. Therefore, this is a mutual relationship between Dagestanis and other Russians and vice versa,” Preobrazhensky explained.
