This has caused deep alarm in Tehran.

Israel's attacks on Iran early Saturday destroyed air defense systems designed to protect several key oil refineries and petrochemical plants, as well as systems guarding a major gas field and a big port in southern Iran.

This is reported by the New York Times.

The sites Israel targeted were defenses at the vast Bandar Imam Khomeini petrochemical complex in Khuzestan province; the major economic port of Bandar Imam Khomeini adjacent to it; and the Abadan oil refinery, according to three Iranian officials and three senior Israeli Defense Ministry officials. Air defense systems were also hit in Ilam province, at a refinery in a gas field called Tang-e-Bijar.

Israel's destruction of air defense systems has caused deep alarm in Iran, three Iranian officials said, leaving critical energy and economic hubs vulnerable to future attacks if the Iran-Israel retaliatory cycle continues.

Two Israeli officials said the initial plans, drawn up immediately after Iran launched a series of ballistic missiles at Israel in early October, included strikes on targets linked to Iran's energy industry and nuclear project.

Israel struck targets in Iran on Saturday in retaliation for a massive ballistic missile attack against Israel in early October. A series of explosions were reported in Tehran and other cities. The IDF officially confirmed the attack, saying it was carrying out precision strikes on Iranian military targets.
