Political Prisoner, Scientist Yury Adamau Sentenced To Three Years Of Imprisonment

Political prisoner, scientist Yury Adamau was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a penal colony. Such a verdict was passed on July 24, 2023 by the Minsk Municipal Court.

The case was considered by Judge Dzina Kuchuk. The political prisoner was found guilty under Article 361-2 of the Criminal Code (“financing of extremist activities”). Prosecutor Raman Bizyuk supported the accusation, human rights activists report .

Yury's colleagues reported his detention in early March. Later it became known that Adamau was placed in the remand prison #1 on Valadarski Street in Minsk. According to pro-government media, he was detained for 24 donations totaling $1,590.

Yury is a member of the Belarusian community for free software, co-founder of the popular science samizdat “Pamylka”. He studied theoretical physics at Belarusian State University, and subsequently received a PhD from the University of Warwick (England) in the field of condensed matter physics. He was doing postdoctoral research at Brookhaven National Laboratory (New York State, USA) on improving numerical modeling for highly correlated systems. And one more postdoctoral research in the theory of condensed state physics at Texas A&M University (USA).
