The general is better known by the nickname "the Syrian Butcher".

The UK Ministry of Defence's military intelligence service has commented on Twitter on the alleged appointment of Aleksandr Dvornikov as the new commander of Russian forces in Ukraine.

According to British intelligence, Dvornikov's appointment represents an attempt to centralize the command and control of the troops. The agency believes that a failure to ensure the cohesion and cooperation of troops severely hampered the Russian invasion.

"Like many other Russian military leaders, Dvornikov has experience in commanding troops in Syria. He also commanded troops in the Southern Military District adjacent to Donbass since 2016. The Russian propaganda emphasises the development of an offensive precisely in Donbass. The choice of Dvornikov demonstrates how stubborn Ukrainian resistance and ineffective planning before the war forced Russia to reconsider its operations," the British intelligence agency believes.

It should be noted that Russian official sources have not yet confirmed the change in the military leadership. Only the media and Western politicians have reported on Dvornikov's appointment. In the media, Dvornikov is also known by the nickname "the Syrian Butcher".
